Chapter 12 — West Africa

West Africa — Yorubaland Nigeria, Dahomey kingdom (modern Benin), Dogon Bandiagara escarpment (modern Mali), Akan territory (modern Ghana) · Ile-Ife classical 1000-1400 CE through Dahomey kingdom 1600-1900 CE

How it plays, in canon's own words

Dominant combat mode — puzzle_routed; realized as the Ifa binary logic (the Ajogun-warding and abiku-discernment casts), the Anansi Type-6 Trickster Puzzle, and the Ogboni night-court evidence, consistent with the main beat's expose primary verb. docs/spine/CH_12.md:261

Sound

complete track — awaiting Josh's ear, authored score — orchestral rung one, authored score — generated tail, authored score — sketch realisation, generated score — iteration, generated ambience bed and generated tension layer

The track labelled complete track is a whole CUE rather than a theme statement: two and a half to five minutes across five to twelve composed sections, each with its own instruments, dynamic level and harmony. It exists because Josh listened to the thirty-second cohort below and said it was all the same track, and the measurement agreed with him on every axis a listener hears first. Three things about it are measured: the form is real, no single layer repeats itself for more than eight bars — measured one part at a time, because an ensemble measurement cannot see a pad tiling under a moving flute — and the loop point does not close with a full cadence, read off the notes rather than copied off the brief. What is not measured is whether it is any good. Nobody has heard it yet. The themes marked AUTHORED are composed in notes by the factory to a written brief, and each one is checked against that brief rather than against a description of it — every constraint the composition claims is a control over the notes. Where a track is labelled orchestral rung one, that score is played by real recorded instruments — a public-domain sampled orchestra, one part per line, with the loop point written into the arrangement rather than faded. It is a real realisation and it is not a professional scoring session. Where a track is labelled sketch realisation, the tune is finished and the orchestration is not: what you hear there is additive synthesis, not an orchestra. The themes marked GENERATED came out of the factory's own composition loop and were picked by measurement rather than by ear. These are ITERATIONS, not finished themes. Where a percentage is printed beside a track, it is that automated checklist — 8 of the doctrine's 13 melodic diagnostics. No diagnostic that needs a person to listen and sing it back has been run on any of this, on either lane. Anything below labelled ambience is a place, not a theme.

These are the thirty-second theme statements the complete tracks above supersede. They are kept rather than removed: this cohort is the control arm the sameness measurement was taken on, and the comparison is what makes the track above legible as an answer to it.

Where these came from

These are the beds the build actually loads for this chapter, joined off the sound registry and the build's own picked sources — a bed appears here only when the registry row, the picked cue and the file on disk all agree. When themes are written they appear above the beds, and they will be named as themes. Every length printed beside a track is measured off the served file's own bytes (Ogg granule positions, MP3 frame headers), never read from the browser.

The opening, in the chapter's own words

As a child the protagonist comes down out of the forest into a country of kings and cities, of bronze-casters and diviners and a coast where the Atlantic trade has planted its factories and drawn the kingdoms along it into the traffic in human lives. She walks first into Ile-Ife, where the smiths pour metal into wax and pull faces out of it so lifelike they seem about to speak, and she understands that she has crossed from the forest-that-is-a-mind into a civilization that writes its memory in bronze and in mathematics. Here a babalawo, an Ifa diviner of twenty years, casts the palm-nuts and the divining chain and reads her vital force without ever naming it aloud, holding her secret the way the diviner holds any true thing, in confidence and not in threat. It is the opposite of the hostile eyes she has learned to feel, and it steadies her.

And it is the babalawo who shows her that Ifa is not a decoration but a weapon. A household is losing child after child, and the elders name the grief for what the tradition knows it to be: an abiku, a spirit-child sworn to be born and die and be born again, feeding on a mother's mourning. In another town an affliction with no human cause presses on the living, and the diviner names that too — an Ajogun, one of the two-hundred-plus malevolent forces that wage constant war on human destiny, led by Iku who is Death himself. The protagonist, who has been hollowed and has come back and carries her own lost child like a wound, learns the craft the tradition made precisely to fight these things: to cast the sixteen palm-nuts into their two-hundred-and-fifty-six figures, to read from the figures which force is at work and what it is owed, and to perform the sacrifice and the binding that names it, satisfies it, and drives it off. The orisha are honored and the babalawo is her teacher; the Ajogun and the abiku and the blood-drinking adze the coast fears are the tradition's own condemned enemies, warded and never worshipped, and she stands at the diviner's shoulder against them the way she stood at the healer's in the forest.
